Overview
The transfer of materials is an important component of today's research in the biological sciences. In keeping with academic policy and the objective of basic research, it is the policy of Tufts that results of research are promptly and openly available to others. Biological materials can be patented and then licensed for commercial purposes. However, more often than not, OTL&IC will license biological materials (cell lines, enzymes, vectors, etc.) for commercial purposes without patent protection.

Materials from Tufts
Whether it is for internal research or commercialization purposes, companies interested in receiving University materials are required to obtain a license from the University. Interested parties should notify OTL&IC so that appropriate licensing arrangements may be negotiated.

Materials to Tufts
OTL&IC assists investigators who wish to receive materials from industry colleagues. Companies willing to provide materials to University investigators should notify OTL&IC to negotiate MTAs acceptable to both parties. As a general rule, Tufts will not accept materials which would prohibit publication of research results, or disallow Tufts to own discoveries which may arise from the use of such materials. In return, the University is willing to offer option rights to the resulting IP.
