    For the decade leading up to his position at Tufts University, Larry was managing director of Cancer Research Technology Inc., the US-based office of the technology development and commercialization arm of Cancer Research UK. Previously he worked in academic technology transfer at Brandeis University, Harvard University, and Vanderbilt University. Prior to entering academic technology transfer, Larry held research management positions in the pharmaceutical industry, first with a start-up and then with a multinational company. Larry has a PhD in pharmacology, completed one of Harvard Business School’s Executive Education Programs (PMD), and is the author of over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

    Role Responsibilities

    Focuses on Tufts University’s portfolio of advanced materials technology

    Suresh is the associate director for business development in the TTIC, where he is responsible for commercializing early-stage advanced materials technologies developed at Tufts University. Major areas of focus include biomaterials, nanotechnology, clean-tech, physical sciences, and engineering. Prior to joining Tufts, Suresh was a member of Saint-Gobain’s technology scouting team in charge of identifying and assessing new business opportunities. He has twenty years of experience in advanced materials research, having led cross-functional teams at SONY (semiconductor – metals/thin-films) and Saint-Gobain (appliance/personal care – ceramics/polymers/colloids), and also at an internal start-up (clean energy – nanofilms/epitaxy). Suresh holds an undergraduate degree in metallurgy from IIT-Mumbai in India and a PhD in materials engineering (heat transfer/fluid flow) from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

    Before joining the TTIC as an assistant director and the Tufts Launchpad | Biolabs liaison, Farnaz worked in licensing, start-up formation, and patenting roles at Partners HealthCare, Caltech, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to these roles Farnaz helped form and worked at a start-up company investigating cures for neurological disorders, the Institute for EthnoMedicine. Farnaz holds a PhD in pharmacology.

    Sandra’s primary area of responsibility is the management of intellectual property matters across the University, including the School of Engineering, the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, and the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. Sandra joined Tufts University from Lando & Anastasi, LLP, where she counseled clients in various aspects of intellectual property. She specialized in patent prosecution and strategically developing and managing clients’ patent portfolios. Sandra is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center) and obtained her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University.

    John is a senior associate director in the TTIC, where he is primarily responsible for inventions from the life sciences. In this capacity he manages all aspects of the technology transfer process from faculty outreach to evaluation of invention disclosures, marketing, negotiation, and agreements. He has concluded a wide range of licenses, sponsored research, and collaboration agreements; actively facilitated formation of numerous start-up companies; and managed relationships with licensees and industry partners. John started his career in technology transfer at the University of Ottawa, as its first full-time technology transfer professional, and has worked in a start-up company. John has an undergraduate degree in biology, an MSc in molecular biology, and an MBA from Queen's University in Canada. John has earned the Certified Licensing Professional designation.

    Travis joined the TTIC in April 2016 as a licensing associate. He assists senior case managers with intellectual property and technology transfer matters arising from Tufts University. Travis has a strong background in life science research, having focused on neuronal disease and development of the eye. Prior to joining Tufts, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center and a consultant for miLEAD Consulting in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Travis received his PhD in neuroscience from Pennsylvania State University and his BS in biological sciences from Drexel University.

    Financial matters and government compliance

    Tom focuses on operations at the TTIC. He administers financial matters, oversees the operating and income/expense budgets for technology transfer at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center, and assures compliance with federal invention reporting requirements. He also has general responsibility for Tufts University trademark registrations and trademark licenses. Before joining the TTIC in 1999, Tom was a senior editor at the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at Harvard School of Public Health. Tom has a BA in fine arts from Tufts University, an MA in art history from Williams College, and a Certificate of Special Studies in Management from Harvard Extension School.

  • Emily Rezendes

    Copyrights, trademarks, material transfer agreements (MTAs), nondisclosure agreements (NDAs), service agreements

    Emily is the contracts and intellectual property specialist for the TTIC. She is responsible for drafting and negotiating the legal terms of agreements that include licenses, nondisclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, and service agreements. Emily obtained her JD from Northeastern University School of Law in 2014, where she completed internships with WGBH and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and she is licensed to practice in Massachusetts. Emily’s undergraduate background is in Japanese language and literature, and she holds level N2 certification from the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

    Leads the Engineering Team. Technology Manager for
    Tisch College of Civic Life

    Martin is a senior associate director in the TTIC. Martin is responsible for identifying, evaluating, marketing, and commercializing early-stage technologies as the lead case manager for the School of Engineering. Major areas of focus include engineering, tissue engineering, biomaterials, medical devices, nanotechnology, clean energy, and computer science. Martin has negotiated hundreds of collaboration, sponsored research, option, and license agreements and has also facilitated the formation of dozens of start-up companies. Prior to joining Tufts in 2000, Martin was a licensing associate at Harvard University’s technology transfer office. Martin is a graduate of Harvard University having majored in physics and minored in East Asian studies. He has been an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers since 1996 and the Licensing Executives Society since 2002. Martin became a Certified Licensing Professional upon establishment of the designation in 2008.
